Plugins and Add-ons: Menu options in ILIAS 6.0

We are looking to try out adding our plug-ins via the user interface plugin with ILIAS 6.0. However, we are not able to figure out the details on how we can add menu items to Main menu bar (which has changed in the new UI now) like how we did with ILIAS 5.x.

Any help or pointers to right documentation would be useful. Thanks!

As you added the thread in the Plug-in-forum: It's no plug-in anymore. It's integrated in ILIAS.

As far as I see, first you have to add a top-item in Administration > Layout and Navigation > Main Menu > Top items.
Decide if it's a container (bunch of items/links) or a (single) link.

Afterwards you go to Administration > Layout and Navigation > Main Menu > Items and add an item.
Decide if it's a repository link etc., add an icon, match it with the already created Top item and set it active.

Or where exactely did you struggle?

We have a UI plugin developed earlier for 5.x and it was done through the steps as in

Now, with ILIAS 6.0 we are not seeing the plugin getting added to the main navigation bar after the installation. So, wanted to know what steps to be followed to get it configured automatically during installation? There has to be a way to code this requirement in the application code.

Ah, OK, it's your own plug-in. Sorry, I can't answer your question. Too technical. I am just the GUI-guy.

Hi snnishi

The UI of ILIAS 6 and the architecture changed quite a bit. I updated the linke page of yours somewhat. Hope this helps.

Short story is; We recommend to use the new hooks for the Global Screen for UI adaptions in Plugins wherever possible instead of directly manipulating tpl files. I created a page documenting this somewhat: https://docu.ilias.de/goto_docu_pg_124767_42.html

Also, I published a base plugin demonstrating the new possibilities Global Screen offers you to hook new Behaviours into the Main Controls. This plugins demonstrate the base setup for adding a new top Main BAr entry that can be controlled through global roles. You can add a new Global Role controlled Main Bar entry through: -> Administration -> Layout and Navigation -> Main Menu -> Add New Main Entry -> Check "Global Role Based Access" Radio Option

Note this plugin is only for demo purposes and is not tested, for production use. See: https://github.com/Amstutz/RoleBasedTopItemAccess.

However you can still use the old ways of directly working on the tpl files with the ilUIHookPluginGUI plugins. However, note that some template files have change/been removed/replaced. I left a comment on the linked page of yours.

Hallo alle miteinander,

ich wollte einmal erfragen, ob irgendwer bereits einen Webshop auf einer Ilias Plattform mit eingefügt hat. 


Also als Beispiel ich interessiere mich für den Kurs und habe die Möglichkeit diesen direkt auf der Ilias Plattform zu erwerben.

Welche Erfahrungen habt ihr dazu? 

Wurde es bereits umgesetzt?

Ich freue mich auf Euer Feedback :)

Es gab mal eine Lösung, die mit 5.2 aber rausgefallen ist. Ich weiss nicht, wie aktuell die Plug-in-Idee von Databay ist, aber vielleicht wäre dort eine Anfrage (und Funding) zielführend:

vermutlich haben es einige von euch schon mitbekommen, siehe u.a.:

...wir haben die Sicherheitslücke in der Tat auch jetzt erst geschlossen, es könnte also durchaus sein, dass es einige von euch auch trifft?


Besteht hier die Möglichkeit, dass dies in der Installationsanleitung und/oder Doku aufgenommen wird?

Solche Git-Repositories sollten grundsätzlich nicht zugänglich sein, dem stimme ich natürlich zu. Im Fall von ILIAS sehe ich hier allerdings weniger Missbrauchspotential als bei anderen Applikationen:


  • ILIAS ist bereits Open Source, der Quellcode ist also bereits bewusst öffentlich zugänglich

  • Somit sind auch keine Konfigurationsdateien mit vertraulichen Daten (Passwörter, Keys, etc.) darin enthalten



Trotzdem ist es sicherlich ratsam den Zugriff auf das Git-Repository zu unterbinden. In ILIAS ist in der .htaccess-Datei für Apache bereits seit Dezember 2017 eine entsprechende Regel enthalten:

Hallo zusammen,


ich habe eine Herausforderung mit dem Setup eines neuen Mandanten über das Setup-Tool.


Hintergrund ist, dass die Datenbank von meinem aktuellen Life-System auf einen anderen MySql-Cluster umziehen soll. Dazu möchte ich im ersten Schritt einen neuen Mandanten mit der DB auf dem neuen Zielsystem anlegen um die Performance zu testen.


Beim Anlegen der neuen DB über das Setup-Tool bekomme ich die  Fehlermeldung:
„Database can't be reached. Please check the credentials and if database exists“


-          Die Datenbanken dür den Test sind vorhanden!


-          Eine Verbindung von einem anderen Webserver mit phpmyadmin / adminer funktioniert


-          Der zur Verfügung stehende DB – Benutzer hat eigentlich alle Rechte für die angegebenen Datenbanken (grant all privileges)


-          Die SQL-Verbindung vom ilias-Server über die Konsole funktioniert


-          Die SQL-Verbindung vom ilias-Server über ein php-test-script funktioniert


-          Die Verbindung über das setup-Tool funktioniert nicht….


Rahmenbedingungen:


-       Server:  Apache/2.4.6 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) OpenSSL/1.0.2k-fips PHP/7.1.8


-       MySql Server-Version: 8.0.20 - MySQL Community Server – GPL, Protokoll-Version: 10


-       Ilias: v5.4.2 2019-05-09)


-       Setup-Tool: ILIAS 5.4.2 2019-05-09


Hat jemand eine Idee wo ran das noch liegen kann oder wo ich weitere Hinweise zur Lösung des Fehlers bekommen kann (logfile etc)? Über weitere Hinweise würde ich mich sehr freuen.

Der Datenbankserver ist nicht "zufalligerweise" auf dem selben Rechner wie die ILIAS-Instanz? Falls ja dann ist es wichtig im Datenbank-Setup als Host die IP-Adresse (127.0.0.1) und nicht 'localhost' anzugeben.

das ist nicht der Fall. Die Server stehen im selben Segment, sind aber dedizierte Systeme.

Via SimpleSAMLphp a SingeSignOn shall be realized in ILIAS 5.3 and another application.

A SimpleSAMLphp-IdP is set up and properly running.

What I do not know:
1. how must the field "Unique attribute for user account identification" be set in the ILIAS-IDP settings? Do not find any documentation on this.

2. how must /var/simplesamlphp/metadata/saml20-sp-remote.php in IdP be configured?
