Noch ein weiterer Hinweis: In den eingerichteten Foren kann die Benachrichtigung aktiviert werden. Dort ist das "Glöckchen" sichtbar und die entsprechende Funktion aktivierbar.VGMarcus

Yup, you're right on there. Making a skin is definitely the way to go, however just ensure that in upgrade the default skin (that you're overloading) hasn't made too many significant changes.
