I would advise against a direct upgrade from version 5.0 to 6. In between the two releases lies a development effort of around 5 years and a lot has changed in this time.
If I was tasked with an upgrade like this, I would probably take the following intermediate steps:
There are currenty two supported branches: 5.4 and 6 (the versioning scheme has been simplified with ILIAS 6) and for both of them there were new releases published lately:
I hope this explains the difference.
If I was tasked with an upgrade like this, I would probably take the following intermediate steps:
- Upgrade to ILIAS 5.3.23 (last release to support PHP 5.5 - assuming this is the PHP version currently in use)
- Switch to PHP >=7.2 (either via OS upgrade or by manually installing a newer version of PHP)
- Upgrade to ILIAS 6.5 (latest release at the time of writing, see below)
There are currenty two supported branches: 5.4 and 6 (the versioning scheme has been simplified with ILIAS 6) and for both of them there were new releases published lately:
- 5.4: Latest release is 5.4.18 (older, but still supported version)
- 6: Latest release is 6.5 (current version)
I hope this explains the difference.
